Our Hospital is using HIS 2000 for SNA and want to bring all systems up to
the current levels. The HIS Database server is Windows 2000 SP4 and we have a
mixture of OS on the display and printer gateways of W2K and W2003. The new
database server will be 2008 or 2008 R2. What is the upgrade path to arrive
at our goal ?

Thanks in advance.

Let me add that we use DLC and are not going to use IP-DLC

Ron,

The only version of HIS that is supported on Windows Server 2008, Windows
Server 2008 R2, and Windows 7 is HIS 2009. HIS 2009 does include DLC for use
with the 802.2 DLC link service on 32-bit systems. DLC is not and will not
be supported on 64-bit systems. As I'm sure you are aware, Windows Server
2008 R2 is only available as a x64 operating system. Therefore, there is no
way to use DLC on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Also, DLC will be removed from HIS with our next release (HIS 2010) that
will be released later this year.

HIS 2009 requirements are available at
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifecompmatrix#H.

If you need to use DLC, the upgrade path to the most recent version
(offering the longest support time frame) would be to the 32-bit version of
HIS 2009 and the 32-bit version of Windows Server 2008.

Thanks...

Hi Ron,

Stephen's pretty much covered it off. My only things to add would be.....

- Clients. What client o/s do you run? If you have anything Windows 2000 or
earlier then an older than HIS 2009 client will be needed for those - which
doesn't stop you upgrading the server end.

- Printers. I always keep a separate HIS server for printers. Just make sure
that you can get Windows 2008 drivers for the printers you need and test the
formatting comes out as required.

- Database. This is presumably for TI HIP/WIP processing? Basic
display/printer emulation HIS doesn't need/use a SQL database. Anyway, HIS's
requirements for the database are based on the SQL Server version, it doesn't
care about the O/S, so you should be able to use Windows 2008 R2 for this if you
like (and I do like it for it's excellent clustering support) assuming that you
don't have any HIS services on the database server, just the database.
